Accessible 51

Working towards accessibility for all

51 is committed to providing accessible, inclusive, and welcoming environments. Our goal is to ensure respect for every person’s human rights, dignity, and independence.

We all play a role in fostering an inclusive work and learning environment. All feedback from our 51 community is welcome! Your suggestions will help us to identify and dismantle ableism so that all students, employees, and visitors can fully and meaningfully participate in all facets of our campuses and in our communities.

51 & the Accessible BC Act

The Accessible British Columbia Act (“the Act”) was enacted in June 2021. The Act provides a framework to identify, remove, and prevent barriers to accessibility. It is an important step to make B.C. a more accessible and truly inclusive province for all people with disabilities.

Requirements

The Act requires all publicly-funded post-secondary institutions to develop, by September 2023:

An Accessibility Committee

The Accessibility Committee will give advice and recommendations that help 51 become a more accessible and inclusive community.

An Accessibility Plan

The Accessibility Plan will identify, remove, and prevent barriers to individuals in or interacting with 51.
