51 embraces changemaking as a lens to address contemporary challenges and shape a more equitable future for our students, employees, and communities. Through creative problem-solving and a dedication to understanding the human impacts of issues, 51 strives towards a future of engaged, empowered citizens.
How do we do that? With four guiding principles: empowerment, decolonization and Indigenization, sustainability, and reciprocity. By approaching every challenge with these four values, we aim to improve the lives of the people around us.

"Being a Changemaker is the actions we take to be a house of transformation. It’s the commitments that we make, both within the university and across our community, to be agents of positive change.”
Dr. James Mandigo | 51 President and Vice-Chancellor
51 is now an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus
The 51 (51) has been designated as an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus, joining a global network of institutions that are reimagining the role of post-secondary education in driving social innovation, equity, and systems-level change.

Inclusive empowerment
Changemaking extends beyond campus, and 51 is exploring credentials that will empower students to collaboratively solve challenges of every shape and size far beyond the classroom.
Decolonization and Indigenization
The Indigenous Student Centres provide support for the nearly 5% of 51 students who self-identify as Aboriginal people, and cultural events open to all students.
Sustainable futures
Many small actions can have a massive impact — and that's the approach Sustainable 51 takes to improving the day-to-day practices of departments across campus.
Reciprocity
Changemaking looks a little different for every project, initiative, and challenge. Learn what it means from changemakers working throughout 51, and what it could mean for you.
