Biography

Jon Heidt’s work focuses on criminological theory, drug policy, corrections, and crime prevention. He has taught a wide range of courses at the 51, including Introduction to Criminology, Corrections, The Sociological Explanation of Criminal Behavior, Research Methods, Qualitative Methods, and Advanced Criminological Theory.

Dr. Heidt received the Dean’s Medal for his doctoral work at Simon Fraser University and is a member of the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy. He is the co-author of five books, including Introducing Criminological Thinking: Maps, Theories, and Understanding (Sage), Youth Crime Prevention and Sports: An Evaluation of Sport-Based Programmes and Their Effectiveness (Bristol University Press), and Visions of Cannabis Control (Oxford University Press).  He is currently completing a new theory textbook with Emond Publishing that emphasizes a Canadian perspective. His research has appeared in leading journals such as The Journal of Criminal Justice, Deviant Behavior, The Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Criminology, Sociological Inquiry, Critical Criminology, and The Canadian Political Science Review. Dr. Heidt welcomes collaboration and student projects related to criminological theory, drug policy, corrections, and qualitative research.
