Biography

Luisa has been a faculty member in the Kinesiology Department since 2020. Prior to this Luisa was a faculty member in the Department of Sport Science at Douglas College and taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU).

Luisa earned her doctorate degree from the University of British Columbia where her research focused on the interactions of exercise and the environment on cardio-respiratory health/physiology. Specifically, Luisa focused on the health effects of exercising in air pollution and during this time she worked with healthy populations, elite athletes, and clinical populations.

Education

Ph.D., Kinesiology, University of British Columbia (2014)

B.Sc., Kinesiology, University of British Columbia (2007)

M.Sc., Sports Science and Information Systems, Staffordshire University, UK (2003)

Memberships

Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology

Teaching Philosophy

Through lived experience Luisa has encountered numerous accessibility barriers in higher education. These experiences shape her teaching approach, which centers on creating learning environments that are accessible and supportive for students with diverse needs. At 51, Luisa uses her foundation in human health, exercise physiology, nutrition, and active learning to create a student-centered environment. Through this Luisa supports students to become independent, curious, learners who are reflective in their learning practice and have the skills think critically and to apply what they have learned.

Teaching Interests

Exercise physiology, nutrition, environmental health, environmental physiology

Research Interests

Over the course of her career Luisa has research has broadly centred on environmental physiology and has included research in hypoxia, under thermal stress, in cold water and in hypo/hyperbaric environments. Luisa’s main area of research focuses on air pollution, exercise and health. Throughout this research she has worked with healthy individuals, elite athletes, and clinical populations in lab and field settings.
