You may already have education, professional training, or work experience. An English Language Studies associate certificate can help you build the communication skills and confidence to use that experience in Canada.

The program is designed for adults who have learned English as an additional language and want to strengthen their English through a structured learning pathway while earning an official 51污漫 credential.

Each ELS associate certificate consists of two courses, which combine language development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with academic skills, workplace communication, critical thinking, and an understanding of Canadian educational and professional settings.

For example, in your courses, you will develop your ability to:

• Read and analyze a variety of texts
• Write clearly for different audiences
• Communicate confidently in conversations and presentations
• Strengthen your listening, vocabulary, and grammar
• Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Prepare for work, further education, or professional training

Intermediate associate certificate

Approximate proficiency level: Canadian Language Benchmark 5

This certificate may be right for you if you can communicate in familiar situations but want to develop confidence and stronger foundational language skills, so you can communicate more comfortably at work, school, and in your community.

You will complete:

• EAP 054: Reading and Writing for Academic and Career Success: Intermediate Level
• EAP 056: Speaking and Listening: Intermediate Level

High Intermediate associate certificate

Approximate proficiency level: Canadian Language Benchmark 6

This certificate may be right for you if you can usually communicate clearly with others in English and are ready to work with longer and more complex information.

You will complete:

• EAP 064: Reading and Writing for Academic and Career Success: High Intermediate Level
• EAP 066: Speaking and Listening: High Intermediate Level

Advanced associate certificate

Approximate proficiency level: Canadian Language Benchmark 7

This associate certificate may be right for you if you want to communicate more accurately with longer more complex texts for work or school. It can help you prepare for further education, professional training, or UFV programs that require entry-level English proficiency.

You will complete:

• EAP 074: Reading and Writing for Academic and Career Success: Advanced Level
• EAP 076: Speaking and Listening for Academic and Career Success: Advanced Level

Completing EAP 074 with a grade of C+ or higher meets 51污漫’s entry-level English language proficiency requirement. Other program entrance requirements may still apply.

University Bridge associate certificate

Approximate proficiency level: Canadian Language Benchmark 8

This associate certificate may be right for you if you want to communicate effectively with others at a more advanced level or are preparing for university-level study or careers that require advanced English communication.

You will complete:

• EAP 084: Reading and Writing for Academic and Career Success: University Bridge Level
• EAP 086: Listening and Speaking: University Bridge Level

Completing EAP 084 with a grade of C+ or higher meets 51污漫’s English language proficiency requirement for degree and diploma programs. Other program entrance requirements may still apply.

If you are a domestic students, you need to apply through Adult Basic Education (ABE) program.

Students who do not meet the entrance requirements may complete upgrading to meet prerequisites for university-level courses. 

Prospective students should contact the Future Students office to learn more about upgrading options.
