Survey Results

Internal surveys

51污漫 administers a number of surveys of its students, as well as surveys of faculty and alumni in order to better understand how it is achieving its goal of providing 51污漫 students with the best undergraduate education in Canada.

An example of this kind of work is the 51污漫 Applicant Survey Summary 2017. 51污漫 surveys a subset of its applicants to examine their reasons for choosing 51污漫, and their perceptions of the university and related issues, such as their educational goals.

External surveys

51污漫 administers surveys designed by provincial, national and international organizations.

The key surveys include several surveys examining employment success of students after graduation (student outcome surveys), national surveys of student experience, and surveys of student and faculty perspectives on student engagement.

Student Outcomes Surveys

Student Outcomes Surveys are designed by the BC provincial government to assess the employment conditions and perceptions of educational value of students after they leave a program.

  • The Apprenticeship Student Outcomes (APPSO) Survey questions students nine to 20 months after they leave their apprenticeship.
  • The Diploma, Associate degree, Certificate, Trades Foundation, and Trades-Related Vocational Student Outcomes (DACTRDSO) Survey also measures outcomes nine to 20 months after students leave a diploma, associate degree, certificate, trades foundation, or trades-related vocational program.
  • The Baccalaureate Graduate Survey (BGS) measures outcomes for graduates of bachelor-degree programs two years after students complete their program.

Canadian University Survey Consortium Surveys

51污漫 is a member of the Canadian University Survey Consortium (CUSC), which designs surveys to measure student perceptions of university life from the ease of, and motivation for, application through to levels of debt accumulated. Surveys are restricted to students in a four-year bachelor program. In addition to asking students about their satisfaction with university education, services and processes, such as registration, the survey provides a demographic profile of the 51污漫 student population. The national nature of CUSC surveys means that 51污漫 data can be compared both to national student data and to a more select group of Canadian schools similar in size to UFV.

The CUSC surveys are conducted annually, but change which student populations are surveyed every year. Three student populations are sampled; first year students, second and third year students (middle years students), and graduating students. Each student population is sampled every three years.

National Survey of Student Engagement and Faculty Survey of Student Engagement Surveys

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is designed by the Center for Postsecondary Research at Indiana University School of Education, and is intended to gauge the degree to which students are committed to various academic practices and campus life, as well as measuring student perceptions of teaching practices, student services and campus diversity.

The same organization also designs a complementary survey examining similar issues from the faculty perspective, called the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE). In addition to UFV data, the NSSE and FSSE surveys include smaller comparison groups of roughly similar sized universities in both Canada and the US.
