2020-2023: Open Education Faculty Fellows projects

The following projects were funded through a BCcampus Open Education Foundation Grant for Institutions as well as internally through the Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic. This program was administered through a collaboration between the 51 Library and the Teaching and Learning Centre.


Calculus I and II for Life Sciences Resource Pack

This project involved the compilation of instructor resources for MATH 111 Calculus I (life sciences sections) and MATH 118 Calculus II for the Life Sciences. These resources accompany a custom version of the open access Calculus For Life Sciences book by Leah Keshet ()  and consist of template lecture notes, short lecture videos for applications, graphical demonstrations, sample term tests and final exams, worksheets, small scale projects, group projects and capstone student projects. Also included are solutions to sample assessments as well as an instructors’ manual, also supported by the creation of an online homework questions database. These resources are intended to be supplemented with other materials, and the lecture notes can be adapted to personal styles or teaching needs. The sample tests, quizzes and project sections can also be used independently of lecture notes.



 

Web-Based Statistical Software Application for Statistics Education and Statistical Analysis

This project expanded a collection of smart phone/web applets that assist teaching Statistics and Mathematics courses at 51. This suite of applets were expanded to include more functionality such as exploratory data analysis, statistical graphics and interactive data visualization. This suite of applets were converted into a web-based statistical software application to allow students to use their home computers instead of campus lab computers that use proprietary software. The application was built using the open source statistical computing language R and is web based. This open source tool has been used to support students in a variety of STATS courses at 51.



 

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) and Indigenization in Nutrition: Improving a Nutrition OER for Undergraduate Students.

This project entailed the modification of an existing OER for 1st and 2nd year nutrition courses offered at 51 through the School of Kinesiology (https://pressbooks.bccampus.ca/sciencehumannutrition/) in the following ways: 1. Indigenized the OER; 2. Updated the OER to ensure principles of EDI and an accessibility are met; and 3. Updated the content/organization of the OER to include more relevant, focused and in depth material. Accessible open education resources provide an opportunity to improve the quality of education by ensuring students have access to critical resources that can support their learning. Modifying this text as an accessible resource ensures that the content can be accessed by everyone, irrespective of the barriers they face (e.g. physical, learning, language comprehension etc.), and is a key part of inclusive education. Ensuring that the open education resources are guided through an EDI and indigenization lens ensures that students see themselves in the material, which can help them better connect with their learning, and is a key step towards reconciliation. To date, this resource has not been used to support courses at 51 but will be utilized in upcoming semesters.
