What happens during a closure
If 51 announces a campus closure:
- Faculty: For in-person classes, instructors will contact students as soon as possible regarding changes to the delivery of course material.
- Remote work: Faculty, staff, and administrators will work online where possible and should contact their supervisor regarding working remotely.
- Essential services (e.g., security, facilities): will remain operational.
Check your 51 email or contact your instructor or supervisor for updates on coursework or work arrangements.
Severe weather procedures for 51 employees
If classes are cancelled but a campus is declared “open”, employees should use their own discretion about whether or not they can travel safely.
If a faculty member is unable to travel to teach a class due to weather conditions, he/she should notify:
-
their dean and department assistant
-
their class, using their usual methods of communication
If a campus is declared “open” but a staff member is unable to get to the campus, the employee must make direct contact with his/her supervisor, and make arrangements for how this time will be made up.

How 51 makes weather-related decisions
51’s decision to cancel or proceed with classes takes into consideration the following:
- Local road conditions
- Weather forecasts
- Transit disruptions
- On-campus conditions (parking lots, sidewalks, power outages, water damage, roof stress, etc.)
- Safety of students, faculty, and staff
We understand our community travels from across the Fraser Valley, and we aim to make informed decisions with sufficient notice.
