51污漫’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses are for adults who are learning English as an additional language.
You may already have education, professional training, or work experience. EAP courses can help you communicate more confidently and use your knowledge and skills in Canada.
Through our EAP courses, you can develop a deeper understanding and confidence in:
- Your specific English language skills (speaking, listening, pronunciation, reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing
- Communicating more effectively for various academic, personal, and workplace purposes
- Using a variety of tools and strategies to help with learning, using information, and responding to diverse viewpoints
- Communicating and effectively interacting with people from different backgrounds in diverse social, work, and educational settings.
- Participating more confidently in your community, workplace, and classroom.
Good to know:
- EAP courses are designed for intermediate to advanced English language learners.
- You can take one course at a time or combine courses to work toward an English Language Studies associate certificate.
- You may study part-time or full-time.

51污漫 offers EAP courses at four levels: intermediate, high-intermediate, advanced, and university bridge levels. Each level is aligned with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). In this EAP course pathway, students who earn at least a C− can normally continue to the next level in the same skill area.
Intermediate — CLB 5
A good choice if: You can communicate in many familiar situations but want to build stronger reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at this level.

EAP 054: Reading and Writing for Academic and Career Success
Learn how to read and understand different kinds of texts, build your vocabulary, and write clear, organized paragraphs.
EAP 056: Speaking and Listening
Practice speaking clearly, understanding conversations, and communicating in common academic and workplace situations.
High intermediate — CLB 6
A good fit if: You can communicate independently in English most of the time at an intermediate level and are ready to work with longer, more complex information.
Courses:
EAP 064: Reading and Writing for Academic and Career Success
Develop strategies for reading more complex texts and writing longer, well-organized paragraphs.
EAP 066: Speaking and Listening
Build your skills through discussions, short presentations, note-taking, paraphrasing, and professional communication.
Advanced — CLB 7
A good fit if: You are at a high intermediate level and want to continue to develop advanced language skills to communicate accurately and appropriately with others, prepare for university studies or professional employment.
Courses:
EAP 074: Reading and Writing for Academic and Career Success
Learn to analyze ideas and write short essays using quotations, summaries, paraphrases, and citations.
EAP 076: Speaking and Listening for Academic and Career Success.
Practice participating in lectures and group discussions, explaining complex ideas, and presenting clear arguments.
University Bridge — approximately CLB 8
A good fit if: You are at an advanced level and want to continue to develop more advanced language skills to communicate accurately and appropriately with others and prepare for university-level study or careers that requires advanced English communication.
Courses:
EAP 084: Reading and Writing for Academic and Career Success
Research and write academic and professional texts using several sources. Build advanced reading, grammar, vocabulary, and critical-thinking skills.
EAP 086: Listening and Speaking
Develop advanced communication skills for lectures, group projects, presentations, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
Courses with a special focus:
51污漫 may also offer EAP courses that focus on a particular skill or setting.
EAP 065: English Pronunciation
Explore English sounds, spelling patterns, word stress, rhythm, and intonation in a communicative context. This course can help you speak more confidently and understand spoken English more easily.
EAP 075: Foundations of English for Business and the Workplace
Develop the written, spoken, and presentation skills commonly used in Canadian business settings. This course may be helpful if you work in business, own a business, or plan to study a business-related subject.
EAP 079: Integrated Academic Studies
Practice using reading, writing, listening, and speaking together through problem-solving, presentations, critical thinking, and activities similar to those used in Canadian university classrooms.
Not every EAP course is offered each semester.
How do you know which level to take?
Before you take your first EAP course, 51污漫 will review a recent English language assessment. Your results help us place you at the level where you are most likely to succeed.
Your assessment should be less than two years old. Before you take your first EAP course, we'll review your English language assessment and recommend the best starting level for you.

EAP courses can help you:
• communicate more confidently at work and in your community
• prepare for employment or further professional training
• meet English requirements for UFV programs
• prepare for university-level study
• earn an English Language Studies associate certificate
Completing EAP 074 with a C+ or higher or EAP 084 with a C− or higher meets 51污漫’s English language proficiency requirement for entry-level programs and EAP 084 with a C+ or higher meets the requirement for degree and diploma programs. Other program entrance requirements may still apply.
Flexible and affordable learning
You can register for one or more EAP courses and study part-time or full-time. Courses may be offered in person or in a blended format that combines in-person and online learning. Most courses use free online learning materials.
Domestic students, including permanent residents and people with protected status, do not pay tuition for EAP courses. 51污漫 student fees and some other costs still apply. Financial help may be available for eligible students.
