Employee Labour Engagement
Current State:
Since last Thursday, March 12, nearly 50 meetings have been held with impacted employees in all categories (faculty, staff, exempt) and for all impact types (layoff, workload reduction).
Of those provided notice, there are a small number where mitigation options are still being explored between HR and the FSA. The employees involved in those discussions are aware that mitigation remains an option.
We wish to convey our sincere and utmost appreciation for the support and professionalism for all involved in the layoff process. Recognizing that there is no way to take the pain out of the outcomes, HR, managers, the FSA, and Homewood Health all coordinated effectively to provide as much support as possible to employees.
Next Phase:
The next phase in the process involves employees who were provided notice finalizing their decision regarding bumping, recall, or severance. Once those decisions are made, any bumping decisions need to be implemented. Both the university and HR remain committed to minimizing the number of bumps while ensuring employees have access to the layoff rights provided in the collective agreement.
Budget Update:
With the Senate consultation now complete, we are approaching the final stage of the budget process. On March 26, 51 management will present the recommended 2026/27 Consolidated Budget Plan to the 51 Board of Governors for their consideration and approval.
Bargaining
The FSA recently provided notice to bargain to the university. The parties are developing their availability for April and beyond.
Next steps include:
- Securing dates
- Determining protocol
- Exchanging proposals
