Health and Fitness

Nursing Foot Care

Cost: $2,088 + supply kit ($459+tax)
Prerequisite: Students must be an active, licensed: RN, LPN, RPN, or NP (Nurse Practitioner) to take this course. Certification will be confirmed.

This course includes an in-depth focus on:

  • Assessment of the foot and lower limb
  • Prevention and education for the client with diabetes to assist in preventing diabetic foot complications
  • Sterilization and infection control procedures used in reprocessing instruments
  • Excellent review of the process and resources needed in starting your own business

This course meets the Canadian Association of Foot Care Nurses (CAFCN) competencies and the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA). On completion, students will receive their own foot care kit, including two sets of instruments and clinical supplies needed to start their foot care career.

  • No refund for tuition once the course starts.

  • Clinical supplies are non-refundable and distributed in the mandatory clinical at Brella Community Services (15008 26 Avenue, Surrey, BC).



Panel Management

Cost: Open only to Doctors of BC sponsored students

Doctors of BC has partnered with the 51 to provide practical, skills-based training for medical office assistants and clinic staff who support family practice teams. This program is designed to meet the competencies of a panel manager, including the basics of the patient medical home and primary care network, empanelment, registry-based care, and proactive and preventative care.

 

Course Dates: 

  • Fall Cohort: September 16 - December 9, 2026 | Wednesdays 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM 
  • Winter Cohort: January 21 - April 8, 2027 | Thursdays 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

  • Patient Medical Home (PMH) and Primary Care Network (PCN) concepts 
  • Empanelment and panel maintenance processes
  • Registry-based care and disease registries

  • Proactive and preventative care strategies 
  • Quality improvement principles and workflow optimization 
  • Practical skills for supporting clinic teams through panel management initiatives 
  • Development and implementation of capstone quality improvement project 

 

How does this course help you and your clinic? 

This program provides practical tools and processes that can be applied immediately within a family practice setting. Participants learn how to use clinic data more effectively to support preventative care, identify care gaps, improve patient outreach, and strengthen clinic workflows. By developing panel management skills, clinics can improve patient care, enhance team collaboration, support quality improvement initiatives, and create more efficient and sustainable practice operations.

 

What will I receive upon completion? 

A digital credential will be issued to participants who successfully complete all course requirements: a 51 Digital Badge in Panel Management for Family Practice, in partnership with FPSC

PVPC - Preventing and Protecting Against Violence in the Workplace

Cost: $130 Violence Prevention | $50 Fit Testing
Prerequisite: Violence Prevention for Medium and High Risk Departments (8 Modules), accessible on the LearningHub (phsa.ca).

Healthcare workers learn the steps needed to prevent and protect against violence in the workplace. The curriculum is based on overarching principles and a Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum framework which identifies four main responsibilities in preventing and protecting against violence in the workplace:

1) Recognize Risks and Behaviours
2) Assess and Plan
3) Respond to the Risk
4) Report and Communicate Post-Incident

Participants will learn the foundational knowledge regarding those tasks, first in the series of e-learning modules and then by applying that knowledge in the hands-on session designed to reinforce and practice what they need to do to prevent and protect against workplace violence.

This workshop is a mandatory requirement prior to practicum/clinical placements and is the final component of the Preventing and Protecting Against Violence in the Workplace program which prepares students to undertake practicum placements in health authorities.

Students must complete the eight online modules through the before attending the in-class session.

Health Studies students: Students currently enrolled in the 51's School of Health Studies may to request reimbursement for the tuition cost of this course. Please note this funding does not include the cost of Fit Testing and is not applicable to PVPC Refresher courses.

This offering does not include Fit Testing. You can choose to register for Fit Testing separately.

This 30-minute PVPC refresher course revisits the knowledge and skills acquired during the 8-hour Preventing Workplace Violence course. Annual renewal of this course is required for PVPC-trained students and staff.

Protecting Patient Information

Doctors of BC has partnered with the 51 to provide Medical Office Assistants (MOAs) with the opportunity to learn how to protect patient information in their clinics. At the end of the course, a capstone project allows you to put what you have learned into practice in your clinic.
